This page has been setup as a personal tribute to Lucy for all her family and friends and everyone whose life was touched by her wonderful optimism, happiness and zest for life. Tragically Lucy lost her battle to a rare form of bowel and liver cancer which was diagnosed at a very advanced stage in September 2016. Lucy died on 27th April 2017. Lucy is survived by her husband Paul, and their two young children, Oscar and Emilia. Lucy had BRAF-mutant (BRAFMut) colorectal cancer which occurs in less than 10% of bowel cancer patients. It is our (Lucy's family's) wish to raise the awareness of this particular type of cancer to help improve earlier diagnosis, and also raise funds in Lucy's name in order to fund research into finding a cure to help save and extend the lives of others rather than have them cruelly taken from their loved ones far too early.
Patients with BRAF-mutant (BRAFMut) colorectal cancer (CRC) have a poor prognosis and, as a group, clearly have an unmet need for improved therapeutic options. Appropriately identifying and treating patients with BRAFMut CRC remains a particularly challenging clinical undertaking. The need for further understanding of this disease’s pathogenesis, pathways of metastasis, and novel approaches to treatment is only amplified by the aggressive clinical phenotype with which the disease manifests. During the past decade, we have seen far-reaching advances in the field of targeted therapeutics; yet, the success that has been realised by targeting BRAF in other malignancies, such as malignant melanoma, remains elusive in CRC. The funds raised in Lucy's memory will be ring-fenced specifically for research in this field but will sit under the established charity, Bowel & Cancer Research (Registered Charity 1119105). Lucy's family will be able to direct how the funds will be used and will be kept up to date on the results of any research so that something good can hopefully come out of such a tragic and devastating end of life. Your memories of Lucy and indeed your generosity to help establish this fund are gratefully appreciated.
For cancer cure.
With much love from the O'Neill family.
We are delighted to support Lucy's fund raising page again in lieu of Christmas cards. I have a crazy idea (relating to shaving my head but with a new twist) for future fund raising ... details to follow
